Hard landing

A while ago I posted about an inquiry I had for extra large candle sticks, 1000mm  tall, in 2 different designs and a slightly smaller version in 600mm tall. The inquiry was for 50 units for a wedding.

Well, sadly that whole thing has completely imploded. I made a huge effort in making 6 samples, in varying finishes and in 2 different timbers, recorded all my working times and materials used, prepared a quote, and collected quotes from subcontractors and timber suppliers. And then I find out that these guys have completely unrealistic ideas about this sort of stuff. Figures of £15 for a 600mm candlestick in pine were bandied about the place.

I am not sure where folks like that live. Here in the UK we have something called a minimum wage, and as I type this, that wage is £7.50 for a normal worker. That’s not even a skilled worker, that’s just somebody who’s got enough wherewithal to follow instructions. You go into any skilled labour and this figure goes up rapidly. And this is just what the boss has to pay his workers, not what he needs to charge customers to survive as a business.

I am not trying to rip people off, and when I spoke to the possible subcontractors, my figures about timescales and hourly rates were confirmed by them (for this sort of job I usually quote £25 per hour).

The normal formula for making and selling anything is (material + labour) x 2. Simple enough, and essentially meant to cover all your non-productive time (e.g. time spent on writing quotes, sourcing materials, cleaning and maintaining machinery and so on). So now, presuming that the material for this 600mm candlestick in pine is about £4, we come to a result as follows:

£15/2 = £7.50 – £4 = £3.50 for labour.

Considering an hourly rate of £25 this means that everything (cutting, turning, gluing, sanding, sealing, spraying) is done in 8-9 minutes. Or, using my actual time used, I end up with an hourly rate of about £1.75. Either way is totally unrealistic, unless we have Vietnamese slave children at our disposal (and are happy to have this on our conscience).

Best workshop ever

The last 6 months have been a lot of hard work, but it’s finally paying off. I now have space in my new workshop, which is quite a luxury for me. I am not used to that.

There’s still a lot to do, though. I still need to install the compressed air pipe system, and I haven’t got the new chop saw, band saw or pillar drill, although I have in fact finished work on the rotating tool station:

I also started making all the knobs and handles for the various drawers and cupboard doors. This is probably the only workshop in the UK to have knobs made from solid ebony. One of our friends found a bucket with all sorts of cutoffs when they sorted out one of their garden sheds, and gave it to me with the words “Maybe these are good for something, they are definitely useless as firewood, much too small”. The whole bucket was filled to the rim with short cutoffs of ebony (1″ – 1.5″ long) and walnut (2.5″ – 3″ long), all from 1.5″ square stock.  Not much good for anything else, but they do make very nice knobs.

Considering ebony is on all sorts of lists, and in the “cannot buy for its weight in gold” category, this is quite a windfall.

Recent small commissions

There have been a few small commissions over the last few weeks. They are probably one-offs, but you never know.

First of these was a sculptor from Birmingham. She was in need of a better support/stand for one of her head sculptures. The original one was made from a slab of maple with the bark still attached and the pin being too tall and also having a (rather phallic) knob on the top that got in the way when the sculpture was mounted. After some discussion I came up with this:

The base is a piece of lime, sawed and sanded to 320 grit. The pin is made from pine. The whole lot is simple finished with sanding sealer. Julie, the sculptor, seemed to be very happy wit it, and her partner Mark took the opportunity to ask me to cut a small rowan bole into discs of varying thickness to use as display stands for his pottery.

 

 

 

 

Next was a gentleman from Kidderminster wanting some coasters for his valuable china porcelain vases:

These are made from laburnum, just over 100mm wide and 13mm high, all cut from the same piece. Right at the end I managed to snap my last remaining band saw blade, so I had to order some new ones from TuffSaw. In reality I probably should have done this a long time ago already, but now it just got urgent.

First paid demo

Last week I did my first paid, proper demo, at the Herefordshire Woodturners. This was booked about a year ago, and so far I haven’t any other demos in my calendar, but hopefully this will change soon.

The evening was extremely warm, following an unusually hot spring day (almost 30 degrees C), so by the time I had it all set up, I was sweating already. For a small club (only about 45 members), these guys have a very nice setup.

The HWT have their meetings in a scout hut, which in fact is actually a proper building, more like a small community hall, and easily big enough to seat 70-100 people. On the evening itself there were about 35 present. A jet club lathe and a brand new dust extractor was made available to me, and some space to show some turned items. I had a wireless microphone, which worked fine for the first hour and then the batteries gave up, and there was single camera with the output displayed on a big screen. A small canteen provided hot drinks during the break, and Paul Hannaby had a table set up in the back with various merchandise.

The subject of the evening was a box with lid and finial. I knew I could do it, but time was not to be wasted. I gave the audience a choice of two basic shapes (squat and wide vs. tall and slim) and 3 different woods (birch, yew and ash), and in the end they went for the squat shape by a few hands. I did get carried away a little on some of the explanations and answers to questions, and in the end I had 10 minutes left for the finial (which was turned from prepared holly blank). As always, when you try and rush things, that’s when you make mistakes, and I am no exception to that rule. I produced two catches in a row, had to alter the shape of the finial, and ran over by about 10 minutes, but I think the result was quite good:

After the demo I had a brief chat with the club treasurer, and it seems everybody was happy and he seemed to think they’ll ask me back for another demo in the future. I am certainly very happy with the result.

Lady Luck is a friend of mine

About two weeks ago I received a phone call from Steve Earis. He’s a fellow wood turner, earning his living from making skittle sets and exercise clubs. He had picked up a post from somebody on arbtalk, about a 5t sycamore coming down somewhere in Birmingham and anybody interested could give him a call and have some.

So I give this guy a call, and he’s a little nervous. Turns out he’s previously been burned by another wood turner who not only had not lived up to promises made, but also left him with a mess to clean up. But that’s a story for another day.

I got there next day in the morning, and the tree was down already, but still in one piece. After a little negotiation and a £40 donation to the charity they work for, they cut the trunk into two sections about 3ft long each (trunk diameter was just under 3 ft) and cut these into slabs 4-6″ thick. I had to make three trips with my car to get it all home.

Already when the first slab came off the tree I could see this was going to be good. But it got better. At first I thought that there might be a bit of rippling/curling going on, and I was just happy to get my hands on some nice big chunks of wood. You know, the sort of thickness you hardly ever get from a timber place.

But the more these guys cut off the trunk, the more I realised that there was ripples everywhere. In some places you can even see it right through the bark. Malcolm Thorpe, a fellow club member at the West Midlands Turners, reckons this is because Acers are not the strongest trees in the world, and once the size goes beyond a certain limit, especially if the tree has grown fast, it essentially buckles under its own weight. OK, this tree has grown fast. I counted the rings on one segment, and this tree was certainly no older than max. 80 years, probably only about 60 years. Most of the rings are 2-3 mm wide, but some of them are well over 5mm, and that is fast growth for any tree. Ash trees grow similarly fast, and unsurprisingly they also have a lot of curling going on in older trees. It’s just that ash trees firstly hardly ever get to 100 years because the die on the inside (creating olive ash) and then get cut down or keel over in the next storm, and secondly otherwise the emerald ash borer gets them (ash dieback desease).

So now I had two piles of Sycamore in the garden. I’d sealed the end grain with PVA, and stickered them, as can be seen on the picture. Most of the pieces were so heavy I could barely manoeuvre them around, let alone lift them. And then somebody on the AWGB forum mentioned I should treat them with a mild borax solution to prevent infection with grey stain. Apparently this is something very common with sycamores.

I ordered the borax from ebay (can’t buy it in the UK any longer), and then spent all day on Friday cutting the slabs into more manageable sizes, either by cutting them into thinner slabs (for big plates) or chunks of less width (hollow forms, bowls, etc.) Since most of them had the bark still on, and went right to the outside of the tree, they didn’t want to stand on their sides, so I made myself some simple jigs to hold them upright while I was busy with the chainsaw. These worked a treat, and I’ll probably publish a separate HowTo article on them some time.

This really took my poor electric chainsaw to the limit. Some of the slabs were close to 30″ wide, and my blade is only 16″ long, It had to work very hard for this, and I think it took some umbrage. The motor now sounds distinctly different, and the blade has started to wiggle a little, even when all screws are tight.

And then there were the nails. I have no idea what it is that drives people into putting nails into live trees. Must be the sadist in them. I knew there were going to be nails, because a few were found already when the original slabs were cut from the trunk. But I found loads more. And these are just the ones I went through with the chainsaw. No doubt there will be more. As you can see, I ruined one chain completely. Some of the teeth have broken off, and the chain came off the blade and that ruined the runners. Luckily I have a spare chain, and could finish the job.

I then used my electric hand plane to make the surfaces as smooth and flat as I thought was reasonable. I reckoned that way it would be easier to apply the borax, and also expose a lot less surface to any new fungal spores and other nasties. The pic showing the jig above was taken quite early on in the day, and by the end of the day the shopfloor was covered all over 6″ deep in shavings (and it’s a big shop). I reckon all in all I produced about 100kg of shavings and waste pieces. This is all down to the fact that the original slabs were not cut with any particular care, since the guy was mostly concerned with getting it done quickly, without realizing the extra waste he was producing, and in consequence there were loads of misalignments of cuts. Never mind, all the shavings are going to Helen’s horses, and the cutoffs are going to Cathy’s wood burner. Nothing wasted.

What I discovered during all this activity was that

  1.  The ripples are everywhere, except for the very core of the tree. This is consistent with Malcolm’s theory, since the young tree would have had the strength to support its own weight and therefore not develop ripples.
  2. The upper part of the trunk was cut off right at the point of the first major crotch, and right beneath that crotch is some of the most beautiful figure I have ever seen (see image).
  3. The grey stain was already having a go, and hopefully I managed to cut most of it off and kill the rest with the borax. Would be a shame otherwise.
  4. There are places where the wood inside the tree is effectively green! See image.

So now this is all sealed and treated and stacked and stickered in the garage. The pile is about my height, and I reckon there is about a ton of the finest rippled/flamed/curly/fiddleback/younameit sycamore, and all of it for £40, 3 trips to Birmingham, and 3 days of hard work. OTOH, one of the big slabs, which is about 6″ thick. will easily yield enough material for at least a dozen guitar body sets, and they sell for about £60 a pop. That’ll be £720, possibly more. In a few years time, since it has to dry out first.

So, all in all, I did have to put some time and effort into it, but in the end it was down to Steve Earis being a good friend, and just plain old good luck.
